Great flocks of pigeons descend on Boston.

August 31, 1648

In his journal, John Winthrop writes, “the pigeons came again all over the country, but did no harm (harvest being just in), but proved a great blessing, it being incredible what multitudes of them were killed daily. It was ordinary for one man to kill 8 or 10 dozen in half a day, yea, 5 or 6 dozen at one shoot, and some 7 or 8.”
